World Athletics and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee have collaboratively decided to restructure the competition schedule, marking a significant departure from traditional Olympic norms. In this groundbreaking move, athletics events will kick off the Games at the historic LA Memorial Coliseum during the first week. This venue, distinguished as the only stadium to host events at three Olympic Games, will set the stage for an unprecedented start to LA28.

The decision aims to optimize the overall venue plan and enhance the Olympic experience for both participants and spectators. By placing athletics at the forefront of the Games, organizers anticipate a thrilling beginning that captures global attention and ignites excitement throughout the event. This strategic shift also allows for enhanced promotion of athletics leading up to and during the Games, leveraging the momentum generated by the opening ceremony.

Janet Evans, Chief Athlete Officer of LA28, expressed confidence that this adjustment will benefit not only athletics and swimming but the entire LA28 Games program, reinforcing its appeal and ensuring a memorable experience for athletes and fans alike. Scheduled for July 14-30, 2028, the Los Angeles Olympics will feature over 10,000 athletes from more than 200 nations competing across 35 sports, continuing the city’s legacy as a host of the Games since 1932.
