The 2024 NBA Draft will occur on June 26th and 27th. This year, our draft expert Bryant has semi-retired from scouting, so our coverage will differ from usual. We’ll present prospects, share highlight videos, and discuss general thoughts before opening up for group discussion.

Today’s focus is on Devin Carter, currently projected to be picked by the Sacramento Kings according to NBA.com’s Consensus Mock Draft.

Devin Carter, son of former NBA player Anthony Carter, is an intriguing prospect. However, many Kings fans, including myself, might be hesitant to draft another guard, especially an undersized one. Carter’s main strength is his defense, using his wingspan to disrupt offenses. Despite being a 6’2″ guard, he averaged 8.4 rebounds and 1 block per game, which is impressive. However, his profile is reminiscent of Davion Mitchell—both are undersized guards known for their elite college defense and a single season of good three-point shooting. Carter’s shot, while effective last season, has an ugly release, raising concerns about its consistency in the NBA. Additionally, Carter’s defensive highlights often show blocks resulting from recovery after his man drives past him, which might not be as effective against NBA players.

Given the current Kings roster, it would be surprising to hear Carter’s name called by the Kings on draft night. If they do select him, it likely indicates a trade is in the works, either involving Carter or other guards like Davion Mitchell.
