The WNBA has reviewed and upgraded a foul committed by Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter against Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark to a flagrant-1 violation.

During the third quarter of the Fever’s 71-70 victory on Saturday, Carter delivered a shoulder check to Clark, sending her to the floor before an inbound pass. Initially, it was ruled as an away-from-the-ball foul and was not reviewed further, being considered a common foul at the time.

Reflecting on the incident, Clark stated, “I wasn’t expecting it. It is what it is. It’s a physical game. We just needed to make the free throw and execute on offense, which we did.”

Carter chose not to comment on the incident or Clark postgame.

In addition, the WNBA fined Sky forward Angel Reese $1,000 for not attending the mandatory postgame media session. The Chicago Sky team was also fined $5,000 for not ensuring compliance with league media requirements.

The league retains the authority to reclassify fouls as flagrant or upgrade fouls after the fact. While fines or suspensions can be imposed for flagrant fouls, Carter did not face either penalty this time.

Accumulating points for flagrant fouls during the season can lead to player suspensions if a threshold is met.

Indiana coach Christie Sides commended Clark for maintaining her composure amidst the physical challenges this season during her postgame interview on Saturday.

“We’re just going to keep sending these possessions and plays to the league, hoping they’ll take a closer look at what we’re observing,” Sides said. “I’m just happy Caitlin handled it so well. Despite the constant physicality without getting many calls, she kept fighting. I really appreciate that and am very proud of her.”
