Ferrari’s head, Frederic Vasseur, believes the rising competition is leading to more mistakes from Max Verstappen. After his controversial win over Lewis Hamilton in 2021, Verstappen dominated, winning consecutive titles and starting this season strong.

However, recent races have seen a shift. Lando Norris outperformed him in Miami and almost did so again at Imola, while Charles Leclerc took advantage of Red Bull’s issues in Monaco.

Vasseur commented that increased competition from McLaren and Ferrari seems to be causing errors in Verstappen’s performance. He observed, “I don’t want to draw conclusions from just this weekend, but in the last two weekends, Max has made more mistakes in Imola than in the past three seasons. When you have to push harder and can’t stay in your comfort zone, mistakes happen.”

Vasseur continued, “They will bounce back soon, and I don’t expect the remaining races to be easy. When you need to focus more on details, it leads to a snowball effect, which we’ve seen improve over the last six or seven months.”

Vasseur’s thoughts align with Damon Hill’s observations at Imola, where Verstappen went off track four times during Friday’s practice. Hill, the 1996 F1 champion, noted that Verstappen may be under pressure due to the closing gap with rivals.

Sky Sports analyst Hill remarked, “Other teams are catching up, reducing the comfortable lead Max has enjoyed. When you’re no longer comfortable with the pace, you’re forced to push the car more. Are we now seeing the true performance limits of the Red Bull? Competition is definitely increasing.”
