In a recent post titled “Do the Maple Leafs Need to Make a Captain Change?” by my colleague Karine Hains, she suggests that it might be time for John Tavares to step down as captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs and for Auston Matthews to take over. This topic has gained attention as the team undergoes significant changes.

Toronto Maple Leafs: Breaking News, Rumors & Highlights | Yardbarker

It’s a valid discussion as Tavares ages and Matthews emerges as a leader on the ice. Hains noted that when Tavares was named captain, Matthews had just been involved in an embarrassing incident in Scottsdale, Arizona, which he didn’t report to the Maple Leafs, leading to his being overlooked for the captaincy.

Hains also pointed out that Matthews learned from this mistake. He apologized and vowed to improve, and has since kept his promise. At the time Tavares was given the “C,” the other top candidates were Matthews and Morgan Rielly. Although Rielly was a strong option, Tavares has managed the role with dignity and skill.

Even though Matthews is emerging as a leader and could be a great captain, I don’t believe it’s the right time for a change. Tavares is in the final year of his contract and has performed his duties well. The only reason to make a change would be if Tavares initiated it himself, not because the organization forced it.

There’s no reason for the organization to ask Tavares to give up the captaincy, as it would appear disrespectful and unwarranted. Tavares has been an exemplary captain, supporting younger players and showing no jealousy towards Matthews. He recognizes that Matthews will eventually take over but continues to lead with grace.

The team is likely to renegotiate Tavares’ contract this summer, despite claims of declining skills, which his performance in Prague disproves. Tavares wants to stay in Toronto, and the team will likely re-sign him. As he ages, his role will naturally decrease, but he will remain dedicated.

Matthews will become captain when the time is right, likely after Tavares’ current contract ends. This transition should be smooth and respectful, benefiting both players and the team.

Three Reasons John Tavares Should Remain Captain:

Where do Maple Leafs and captain John Tavares go from here?

1. **Proven Leadership and Experience:** Tavares has extensive leadership experience, having captained the New York Islanders for five years before joining the Maple Leafs. His calm and steady presence has been invaluable.

2. **Exemplary Professionalism and Work Ethic:** Tavares’ relentless work ethic and professional demeanor set a high standard for the team. He maintains focus on his game and responsibilities, inspiring his teammates.

3. **Respected Stability in the Locker Room:** Tavares commands respect in the locker room due to his stable personal life and mature approach to the game. His dedication to the Maple Leafs resonates with fans and players alike.

In conclusion, while Matthews is a rising star, Tavares should remain captain. His leadership, professionalism, and respect within the team make him the best person to lead the Maple Leafs toward future success. If asked to step down, Tavares would do so gracefully, demonstrating true leadership.
