JUST IN: Through to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Doubles Championship, Cabezas and Tomase.

STILLWATER, Oklahoma – Tuesday night at Greenwood Tennis Center, Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase, the women’s doubles duo from Tennessee, advanced to the NCAA Doubles Championship Round of 16 with a First-Round victory. Elaine Chervinsky and Melodie Collard of Virginia were defeated by Cabezas and Tomase, 6-2, 6-2.

After losing the first game of the opening set, the Lady Volunteers turned things around and won six of the following seven games to take the lead and ward off the Cavaliers. They combined for an incredible 75 percent first-serve clip, landing 18 of 24 serves in their opening set.

The Big Orange duo maintained their momentum in the second set, repeating their first-round triumph 6-2 to win the match. In the decisive set, the pair scored 30 of 49 points (61 percent) together. In the second set, Cabezas and Tomase increased their already impressive service percentage even further, hitting 21 of their 26 serves for a stunning 81 percent.

Cabezas and Tomase earned two shutout games for the entire game. They converted six out of eleven opportunities, breaking Virginia’s serve percentage of 55%.

The pairing of Cabezas and Tomase is the tenth in program history to make it to the NCAA Doubles Championship second round. The previous Tennessee duo to do this was Tenika McGiffin and Daria Kuczer, who defeated Wake Forest’s Anna Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth 6-4, 4-6, 10-4 in 2022.
