The Dallas Cowboys, facing departures in free agency, have taken their first step in replenishing their roster with rookie talent. Jerry Jones and the team’s front office made it clear that the NFL Draft was crucial to bolstering their lineup after losing key players to contract situations.

To secure a vital pick on Day 2 of the draft, the Cowboys traded with the Detroit Lions, moving back to the 29th pick and sacrificing their 2025 seventh-round pick in the process. In return, they received not only the Lions’ first-round selection but also a valuable third-round pick, adding significant draft capital to their arsenal.

One of the pressing needs for the Cowboys was to find a replacement for veteran Tyron Smith, who departed in free agency after a long career marked by injuries. With the 29th pick, they chose tackle Tyler Guyton from Oklahoma, a move that addresses the critical issue of providing blindside protection for quarterback Dak Prescott.

This selection also clarifies Tyler Smith’s role for the upcoming season, as he will continue as the starting left guard, a position he excelled in during the previous year. The Cowboys’ focus on continuity and strategic drafting reflects their commitment to building a competitive team despite the challenges of free agency departures.

While this draft pick is a positive start, the Cowboys still have other areas to address throughout the remainder of the draft days. Nonetheless, their acquisition of valuable picks and strategic choices in addressing key positions signal a promising direction for the franchise in the upcoming season.
