49ers news: Is Kyle Shanahan at fault for Trey Lance's lack of development? - Niners Nation

Bomani Jones has suggested that the San Francisco 49ers should contemplate selecting Michael Penix Jr. with their first-round pick, despite the absence of any quarterback controversies currently. Jones expressed this view on his podcast, The Right Time With Bomani Jones, arguing that drafting Penix could be a strategic move for the team.

Jones’ reasoning revolves around the financial considerations for the 49ers, particularly regarding their current quarterback, Purdy, who has limited time left on his rookie contract and is poised for a substantial payday in the near future. He believes that Penix, despite potential injury concerns, presents an intriguing option given his experience and performance at Washington.

While Jones acknowledged the potential backlash from the fanbase and the unconventional nature of such a move, he emphasized the financial aspect and Penix’s abilities as factors that should be weighed by the 49ers.

However, ESPN NFL analyst Domonique Foxworth expressed caution about the idea, citing the progress made with Purdy and the risks associated with Penix’s injury history. Foxworth noted that while it could be a gamble worth considering, he personally wouldn’t pursue it.

Penix’s endorsement of Purdy as a top-tier quarterback adds another layer to the discussion, suggesting that even Penix sees Purdy as a strong option in comparison.

While selecting a first-round quarterback like Penix would be surprising, the 49ers might explore options for a backup quarterback through later draft picks, keeping competition healthy within the team.
