UNC Basketball: Cameron Johnson finalist for Sixth Man of the Year Award

Former UNC basketball standout Coby White has been named a finalist for the NBA Most Improved Player Award, showcasing his significant growth this season in the league.

In his fifth NBA season with the Chicago Bulls, White has elevated his performance to new heights, especially since becoming a starter. He has achieved career-highs across various statistical categories, notably scoring an average of 19.1 points per game, a substantial increase from his previous season’s 9.7 points, while also improving his shooting accuracy to nearly 45 percent from the field. Additionally, White has made strides in rebounding and assists.

White’s exceptional season has earned him recognition as one of the top three contenders for the 2023-2024 Kia NBA Most Improved Player Award, alongside Tyrese Maxey of the Philadelphia 76ers and Alperen Sengun of the Houston Rockets. Despite stiff competition, White stands out as a potential favorite for the award due to his outstanding performances throughout the season.

One notable highlight of White’s season was his 42-point game during the Bulls’ Play-In Tournament matchup against the Atlanta Hawks, showcasing his potential and impact on the court. This breakout season signifies a significant step in White’s NBA career, transforming from a rotational player to a cornerstone for the Bulls’ future, all while still being only 24 years old.
