Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis has voiced frustration over being excluded from the list of finalists for the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award, alleging a bias against him within the league.

In an interview with ESPN, Davis expressed disbelief at not being considered for the accolade, stating, “I’ll never get it. They’re not giving it to me. The league doesn’t like me.” He emphasized his defensive prowess, highlighting his ability to guard players across multiple positions, excel in pick-and-roll defense, block shots, and secure rebounds.

Despite finishing the regular season as one of only two players averaging two blocks and one steal, Davis was not among the finalists, with the list led by Rudy Gobert. The other finalists include Bam Adebayo from the Miami Heat and Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs.

Davis, who has never won the award and was a finalist only twice before, notably in the 2019-20 season, expressed a shift in focus away from individual accolades towards team success and pursuing a championship.

Regarding his defensive capabilities, Davis emphasized his versatility and readiness to defend against various offensive strategies, from guarding guards in pick-and-roll situations to defending posts and perimeter plays.

In related Lakers news, Davis discussed adjustments for Game 2 against the Denver Nuggets, particularly in defending Nikola Jokic, where he aims to take on a more significant defensive role. Additionally, the potential return of backup center Christian Wood from a knee injury in Game 3 offers a boost to the Lakers’ frontcourt, pending further assessment of Wood’s recovery progress and readiness to play.
