Fran Dunphy announced that he will continue as the men’s basketball coach at La Salle for the 2024-25 season, as reported by Field Level Media on April 17, 2024. Following La Salle’s season and their exit from the Atlantic 10 tournament, Dunphy stated that he would discuss his future with university officials before confirming his decision.
Dunphy clarified that there was never any doubt about his return, particularly given his deep ties to the university, having graduated from there in 1970. He expressed this sentiment to The Philadelphia Inquirer, stating, “I never really left.” Despite his age of 75, Dunphy remains enthusiastic about coaching and is excited about engaging with players in the transfer portal to shape the team for the upcoming season.
Dunphy has a long history in Philadelphia’s basketball scene, having coached at Penn from 1989 to 2006, followed by a tenure at Temple from 2006 to 2019, and finally joining La Salle in 2022. Throughout his career, he has amassed a record of 611-361 (62.9 percent) over 32 seasons, including 17 appearances in the NCAA Tournaments with a 3-17 record. At La Salle, his coaching record stands at 31-36. Despite being one of the oldest coaches in men’s Division I basketball, Dunphy remains committed to the game and looks forward to the challenges and opportunities of the upcoming season.
