Steve Sloan: Former Alabama All-American QB, AD dies at 79

Former Alabama All-American and Athletics Director Steve Sloan, known for winning two national championships as a quarterback in the 1960s, has passed away. Sloan, 79, died in Orlando at Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, with his wife Brenda by his side. He had been receiving memory care for the past three months. Sloan, who had a long career in football both as a player and coach, leaves behind his wife of 55 years and his son, Stephen Sloan Jr., of Lima, Peru.

Sloan’s journey in football began as a standout player under legendary coach Paul “Bear” Bryant at Alabama, where he was a backup to Joe Namath before leading the Crimson Tide to national titles in 1964 and 1965. Following his college days, Sloan was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL and later embarked on a coaching career that included stops at Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, Ole Miss, and Duke.

While Sloan achieved success on the field and on the sidelines, it’s his impact off the field that resonates, including his role as Alabama’s athletics director, overseeing significant stadium expansions and contributing to the growth of programs like the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication to the sport and its values.
