The hiring of Megan Duffy as head coach for Virginia Tech women’s basketball has garnered unanimous approval.

The past weeks have been challenging for Virginia Tech’s basketball program, with multiple players from the men’s team entering the NCAA transfer portal, including standout players like Sean Pedulla and Lynn Kidd seeking new opportunities elsewhere. On the women’s side, the departure of head coach Kenny Brooks, who had led the team to national prominence over eight seasons, added to the sense of loss following Elizabeth Kitley’s career-ending ACL injury. The news worsened as star players like Kitley and Georgia Amoore opted to follow Brooks to Kentucky, leaving a significant void in the Hokies’ lineup.

However, amidst these challenges, there’s a silver lining. Virginia Tech’s athletic director, Whit Babcock, made a decisive move by hiring Megan Duffy from Marquette to fill the coaching vacancy. Those unfamiliar with Duffy quickly researched her background and were impressed by her track record as both a player and coach, recognizing her as a proven winner.

Duffy wasted no time, arriving in Blacksburg and immediately focusing on retaining key players like Carleigh Wenzel, Matilda Ekh, Samyha Suffren, Mackenzie Nelson, and Carys Baker. While some top recruits may follow Brooks, there’s optimism as Myah Hazelton remains committed to the Hokies. Additionally, Duffy’s connections from her previous coaching stint are expected to bring in new talent to bolster the team’s roster.
