After an underwhelming tenure with the Miami Dolphins, former wide receiver Chase Claypool is attracting attention from the CFL as he looks to rejuvenate his career.
According to Justin Dunk of 3downnation.com on April 2, the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL have placed Claypool on their exclusive negotiating list. The 29-year-old receiver is now a free agent following stints with four NFL teams over the past four seasons, during which his productivity notably declined.
Claypool entered the NFL as a second-round pick for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2020, showcasing promise with impressive rookie numbers of 62 receptions for 873 yards and nine touchdowns. However, his performance took a downturn afterward. He was later traded to the Chicago Bears, where his role diminished significantly. Despite challenges, Claypool remained adaptable, aiming to make the most of his situation even as his role shifted.
Last year, Claypool was traded to the Dolphins but struggled to make an impact, recording only four receptions for 26 yards in nine games. Despite this setback, Claypool’s ties to Canada, having been born in Abbotsford, British Columbia, and his success during his school years, have drawn interest from CFL teams like the Roughriders.
It’s important to note that while Claypool’s name is on the Roughriders’ radar, it doesn’t guarantee a return to Canada. There’s still potential for NFL teams to show interest, either post-draft or in response to injuries during the season. Claypool remains hopeful for a resurgence in his football career, despite recent challenges.
