Comparing Tre’Davious White’s Signing to Jalen Ramsey: A Different Ball Game?

The Los Angeles Rams made a significant move in free agency by adding cornerback Tre’Davious White instead of focusing on a top defensive lineman, opting to strengthen their secondary with the best available talent. Some fans draw parallels to the Jalen Ramsey acquisition in 2019. However, how closely does White’s signing in 2024 align with Ramsey’s addition?

To begin, it’s important to look at where Jalen Ramsey stood in his career when the Rams acquired him. Ramsey had just wrapped up a strong 2018 season with a 72.1 PFF grade, widely regarded as one of the top cornerbacks in football at around 24 years old. Despite his skill, Ramsey was also making headlines for various reasons.

In contrast, White enters the Rams’ roster after a season where he earned a 68.0 PFF grade, albeit with a shortened season due to an Achilles injury suffered in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins. Looking back at his more extensive 2021 season with the Bills, where he played 11 games and earned a 65.1 PFF grade, gives a fuller picture.

If White can maintain his health, some argue that he could match Ramsey’s caliber, at least in the short term. However, White is now 29 years old and approaching a different phase in his career, much like Ramsey’s tenure with the Rams from 2019 to 2022.

Ultimately, White’s addition may rival Ramsey’s impact for the 2024 season, but the long-term outlook depends on his ability to stay healthy and perform consistently, especially given his injury history since 2020.
