Vontae Davis, Former Miami Dolphins Cornerback, Dies at 35

UPDATED: Confirmation of Vontae Davis’ Passing
The former Miami Dolphins first-round pick from the 2009 NFL draft, Vontae Davis, who played three seasons with the Dolphins, has passed away at the age of 35.

The David Police Department confirmed Davis’ death, stating that officers responded to a medical call after a house assistant discovered Davis deceased. Preliminary information indicates that no foul play was involved in his death, according to police reports.

Former Colts teammates Pat McAfee and Darius Butler discussed Davis’ passing on McAfee’s YouTube show. Colts owner Jim Irsay also expressed his “extreme sadness” on social media, remembering Davis as “a great guy, teammate, player.”

Police have stated that there is no suspicion of foul play, and the investigation into Davis’ death is ongoing, as reported by TMZ.

Vontae Davis’ Career with the Dolphins
Drafted as the 25th overall pick in 2009, Vontae Davis started 36 out of 44 games during his tenure with the Dolphins, recording nine interceptions, including four in 2009 and 2011, one of which he returned for a touchdown. Known for his physicality at cornerback, Davis contributed significantly to the team.

However, Davis fell out of favor with the Dolphins and was traded to the Colts in 2012. His departure from the Dolphins was featured on “Hard Knocks” that year, generating considerable discussion.

In exchange for Davis, the Dolphins acquired second- and sixth-round picks in the 2013 draft, with the latter never being utilized. The Dolphins used the second-round pick to select cornerback Jamar Taylor from Boise State.

Davis went on to play six seasons for the Colts and earned a Pro Bowl invitation in 2014. His career took a surprising turn when he abruptly left the Buffalo Bills in 2018 during halftime of their game against the L.A. Chargers, citing health concerns and the realization that continuing to play could jeopardize his well-being.
