BREAKING: Michigan hiring Lou Esposito as defensive line coach, replacing Greg Scruggs

New Michigan defensive line coach Lou Esposito is known for his keen eye for talent during the recruiting process. His hiring by Sherrone Moore brings a wealth of experience in developing lower-ranked recruits into standout performers.

Esposito’s background includes roles at Memphis as co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach, as well as seven years as the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Western Michigan. He also has experience at smaller programs in Michigan such as Ferris State and Davenport.

Despite his background in smaller football programs, Esposito has demonstrated a talent for identifying underrated players and helping them reach their potential. One notable example is Braden Fiske, who was ranked low in high school but became a standout player at Western Michigan before transferring to Florida State and gaining national recognition.

Another player recruited by Esposito, Marshawn Kneeland, also saw significant development under his guidance at Western Michigan and is now preparing for the NFL Draft. Similarly, Andre Carter, initially recruited by Esposito at WMU before transferring to Indiana, showcased his skills and earned accolades in the Big Ten conference.

Coaches and observers familiar with Esposito’s work speak highly of his ability to build relationships with players, develop their physical abilities, and create strategic plans for their success on the field. His track record suggests that Michigan has made a valuable addition to its coaching staff with Esposito’s recruitment and development expertise.
