Following his release from the Denver Broncos, Russell Wilson attracted immediate interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and Las Vegas Raiders. Despite ultimately choosing Pittsburgh, Wilson reportedly received limited clarity regarding the team’s quarterback plans for 2024.
Initially, Wilson’s signing suggested he would start over Kenny Pickett. However, within a few days, Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, and the Steelers acquired Justin Fields. This acquisition presented legitimate competition for Wilson’s starting position.
Russell Wilson’s salary for 2024 is $1.21 million, and his performance in Sean Payton’s system last season, while solid, was perceived by many in the NFL as having inflated stats. Although Wilson is still considered a starting-caliber quarterback, Fields’ dual-threat abilities and potential as a passer make him a contender for the starting role in training camp.
New York lost the chance to sign Wilson after failing to promise him a starting opportunity. Las Vegas signed Gardner Minshew to a two-year deal worth $15 million guaranteed but did not guarantee him the starting position either. Similarly, Pittsburgh did not assure Wilson of the starting quarterback role, emphasizing that it must be earned through competition, which Wilson, a former Super Bowl champion, welcomed.
Although Wilson is likely the front-runner to start in Week 1, the competition with Fields is expected to be intense. Both quarterbacks face challenges in offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s system, particularly with throwing over the middle. They also share weaknesses in high sack rates and turnovers, making their battle one of the most intriguing storylines for the upcoming season.
As of now, Wilson is expected to start the season as the Steelers’ quarterback, with both him and Fields likely getting ample playing time. The better performer between the two could secure a new contract from Pittsburgh next offseason.
