Impact Players in Alabama Football: Freshman Red Morgan Showing Versatility in Secondary

Minkah Fitzpatrick’s legendary career at the University of Alabama serves as a rare example of a player excelling in multiple positions. Arriving as a highly touted five-star defensive back from New Jersey in 2015, Fitzpatrick quickly made his mark, earning the chance to start either as a boundary cornerback or a nickel corner in his debut season. Ultimately, he secured the starting role at nickel, earning Freshman All-American honors and contributing significantly to Alabama’s College Football Playoff National Championship triumph.

Fitzpatrick’s versatility was further showcased in his final year when he transitioned to safety, culminating in a slew of accolades such as the Chuck Bednarik Award, Jim Thorpe Award, first-team All-SEC, and Unanimous All-American recognition. His success extended to a second national championship and a first-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, highlighting the rarity and impact of players like Fitzpatrick.

While finding players of Fitzpatrick’s caliber is challenging, Alabama’s current roster boasts a promising young talent in the secondary: freshman Red Morgan. Hailing from Phenix City, Alabama, Morgan has garnered attention during spring practice by showcasing his abilities at both ‘Husky’ and free safety positions. Reports indicate that Morgan has been heavily involved at free safety alongside Keon Sabb, demonstrating a knack for tracking the ball and receiving praise from coaches and teammates alike.

While it’s premature to draw direct comparisons to Fitzpatrick, Morgan’s athleticism and adaptability are undeniably noteworthy. Wearing No. 16 for Alabama, Morgan recently made an impact with a pass breakup during a scrimmage, further solidifying his potential as a difference-maker on the field. Colin Hitschler, the Tide’s co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach, commended Morgan’s eagerness to learn and his enjoyable demeanor to coach. Head coach Kalen DeBoer also acknowledged Morgan’s consistent playmaking during the early stages of spring ball, hinting at a bright future ahead for the young defensive back.
