Pittsburgh Steelers to sign QB Russell Wilson | ABC27

The Pittsburgh Steelers explored the possibility of signing quarterbacks Kirk Cousins and Ryan Tannehill before ultimately securing Russell Wilson as their new quarterback.

During this offseason, the Steelers underwent significant changes at the quarterback position following a disappointing performance with Kenny Pickett, Mason Rudolph, and Mitch Trubisky. Consequently, the team decided to part ways with all three quarterbacks.

To fill these vacancies, the Steelers brought in Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, and Kyle Allen.

Although the additions of Wilson and Fields have been widely praised as beneficial for the team’s offensive rejuvenation, it’s worth noting that the Steelers considered other options as well.

According to ESPN’s Brooke Pryor, before signing Wilson, the Steelers were contemplating Ryan Tannehill and also took a brief look at Kirk Cousins as potential quarterback choices.

Each quarterback presented unique advantages that could have suited the Steelers’ objectives.

Tannehill’s candidacy became more compelling due to the Steelers’ hiring of Arthur Smith as their new offensive coordinator. Smith had previously served as the Titans’ OC during Tannehill’s most successful seasons, where Tannehill won the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award and secured a Pro Bowl spot with impressive passing statistics.

On the other hand, Cousins stood out for his consistent performance and impressive passing numbers over several seasons, although he ultimately signed a significant contract with the Falcons.

Reflecting on these options, it’s intriguing to consider how the Steelers’ offseason might have unfolded differently had they pursued either Tannehill or Cousins.

Choosing Tannehill would have likely resulted in Kenny Pickett remaining with the team, competing for the starting role alongside the new addition. However, signing Cousins would have led to more significant roster adjustments and financial considerations, potentially impacting other player acquisitions and contract restructuring decisions.

Despite the various quarterback options available, the Steelers are content with their choices and optimistic about the upcoming season.
