Alabama men’s basketball guard Latrell Wrightsell Jr. was absent from Wednesday’s practice session that reporters were permitted to observe before the Crimson Tide’s Sweet 16 game. Wrightsell had exited UA’s round of 32 victory over Grand Canyon due to a head injury.
During the initial 15 minutes of Alabama’s practice at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, media members did not see Wrightsell on the court or on the sidelines.
Head coach Nate Oats expressed uncertainty about Wrightsell’s availability after practice.
“Latrell is undergoing daily evaluations by the medical staff, and his status is currently day-to-day,” Oats mentioned in a Wednesday press briefing. “I’m unsure if he’ll be able to play or not. We’ll receive updates tomorrow.”
During the same press conference, Alabama forward Nick Pringle sounded more positive about the prospect of Wrightsell playing.
“I believe Latrell will recover well,” Pringle stated. “Regardless of whether he plays or not, we’ll have a solid game plan. I’m confident he’ll be on the court. However, even if he isn’t, we have talented players and coaches who can adapt and perform.”
Wrightsell had previously missed games due to a concussion earlier in the season. He joined Alabama from Cal State Fullerton before this season.
Following the round of 32 victory, Alabama players mentioned that Wrightsell’s injury had motivated the team.
“We had to push through,” Rylan Griffen remarked. “I know Latrell is eager to play. His injury was unfortunate, but he gave his all during his time on the court. We’re focused on ensuring he can return this season.”
Alabama defeated Grand Canyon and is set to face North Carolina in the Sweet 16. If UA triumphs over the top-seeded Tar Heels, they will advance to play the winner of Clemson and Arizona in the Elite Eight.
