A Seattle Seahawks insider suggests that newly acquired quarterback Sam Howell could challenge Geno Smith for the starting QB position in the upcoming season.

Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider initially stated that Howell was brought in to serve as a backup to Geno Smith. However, there is optimism among some within the organization that Howell has the talent and determination to compete for significant playing time in 2024, as reported by ESPN’s Brady Henderson.

Despite facing challenges during his time with the Washington Commanders, including playing behind a struggling offensive line and lacking support from the running game, Howell showcased potential during the 2023 season. He led the NFL in sacks taken but still managed to put up respectable numbers, ranking 12th in passing yards and tied for 15th in touchdown passes, outperforming Smith in both categories.

While Geno Smith earned a Pro Bowl nod in 2023, there are concerns about his performance decline compared to his standout 2022 season. With Smith entering his 34th year and the Seahawks’ new head coach Mike Macdonald remaining undecided about the starting QB, Howell has an opportunity to make his case for the starting role.

The Seahawks’ improved offensive line, better run game, and enhanced receiving options provide Howell with a more conducive environment to succeed compared to his previous stint with the Commanders. This sets the stage for an intriguing competition for the Seahawks’ starting quarterback position in the upcoming season.
