Darryl Strawberry is currently in stable condition following a heart attack, as confirmed by the New York Mets. The former baseball star, known for his time with both the Mets and Yankees, is recuperating at SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital after being stricken on Monday, a day before his 62nd birthday, according to Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz.
Strawberry shared a photo of himself at the hospital on Instagram, expressing gratitude for the medical team’s swift response and a successful stent procedure that restored his heart’s health. He is resting comfortably in O’Fallon, Missouri, as stated by Horwitz.
The Mets plan to retire Strawberry’s No. 18 jersey on June 1, following the retirement of Dwight Gooden’s No. 16 on April 14. Both players played pivotal roles in the Mets’ 1986 World Series victory.
Despite challenges in his career, including battles with substance abuse and colon cancer treatment that led to missing the 1998 World Series, Strawberry had an illustrious baseball career. He was a seven-time All-Star with the Mets, winning NL Rookie of the Year in 1983, and contributed significantly to three World Series championships with the Yankees.
