The Los Angeles Rams have successfully retained right guard Kevin Dotson, preventing him from entering free agency by agreeing to a contract extension. This move addresses one of the team’s primary concerns heading into the offseason, as they aimed to rebuild an offensive line that had performed well but was facing the prospect of key members hitting free agency. Dotson’s breakout performance in the 2023 season, coupled with his impending contract year, suggested the potential for a bidding war for his services.

Despite the Rams having the financial resources to compete in the open market, they managed to secure Dotson’s future with the team. The official announcement came on Wednesday, confirming a three-year deal valued at $48 million.

Dotson’s acquisition from the Pittsburgh Steelers late in the previous summer was initially intended to provide depth to the Rams’ offensive line. However, his exceptional performance on the field elevated him to a star status. According to Pro Football Focus, Dotson ranked as the second-best guard in the league and the third-highest graded interior offensive lineman. This impressive performance earned him the title of the fourth-highest-paid right guard annually in the league.

At 27 years old, Dotson showcased remarkable development as a run blocker, transitioning from a one-dimensional player to one of the league’s best. Despite his relative inexperience at the right guard position, having primarily played at left guard previously, Dotson’s versatility adds value to the Rams’ offensive line. Although there may be concerns about relying heavily on a one-year breakout performance, Dotson’s fit within head coach Sean McVay’s offensive scheme and his consistent performance throughout the season bode well for his future trajectory with the team.
