He disclosed that he and then-FIA president Max Mosley were aware of the truth behind the ‘Crashgate’ scandal at the 2008 Singapore Grand Prix. This scandal involved Renault ordering Nelson Piquet Jr to intentionally crash to benefit Fernando Alonso’s race, resulting in Massa losing his lead and ultimately the championship to Lewis Hamilton. Ecclestone acknowledged that according to regulations, the Singapore race should have been canceled, potentially altering the championship outcome. Despite initially denying giving an interview where he disclosed this information, Ecclestone now supports Massa’s legal action, emphasizing the importance of an English judge determining the matter. Massa has proceeded with his lawsuit, seeking the World title and significant damages, citing the failure of the FIA and FOM to address the issue. Ecclestone expressed his belief that Massa’s decision to sue is justified, highlighting the need for legal resolution. F1 declined to comment on the matter, and inquiries have been made to the FIA for a response.
