A new option has emerged to coach the 49ers.Ex-49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo agrees to deal with Raiders - Los Angeles Times

The San Francisco 49ers are in search of a new defensive coordinator following the departure of Steve Wilks. It appears that a potential candidate from within the organization is emerging for the role.

According to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter, Daniel Bullocks, the team’s current defensive backs coach, has recently completed an interview for the vacant position. Schefter shared this update on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Despite possessing one of the most talented rosters in football, the 49ers’ defensive performance has faced scrutiny, particularly towards the end of recent seasons. Although the team’s showing in Super Bowl LVIII was underwhelming, some attribute this to factors like the absence of Dre Greenlaw. Nevertheless, there’s a sentiment among fans that Wilks’ dismissal might have been scapegoating, though opinions vary.

Bullocks, a former NFL player who notably featured for the Detroit Lions from 2006 to 2009, transitioned to coaching in 2012 at the collegiate level, initially with Northern Iowa. Following stints at Eastern Michigan and a brief tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an assistant DB coach, he joined the 49ers’ coaching staff in 2017.
