Nick Sheridan provided Bellevue native Jack Westover with the stability and guidance he sought during his college football journey at the University of Washington. Initially playing just two high school football games at Mount Si, Westover transitioned to tight end under Sheridan’s coaching at Washington. Despite experiencing changes in coaching staff during his initial four seasons as a player, Westover thrived under Sheridan’s guidance, gaining valuable insights from the perspective of a former Michigan quarterback.
Sheridan, appointed as the tight ends coach by Kalen DeBoer at Washington, played a crucial role in Westover’s development. Learning the game through a quarterback lens, Westover acquired skills in manipulating zones and finding favorable spaces in coverages. Under DeBoer and Sheridan, Westover achieved notable success, amassing 775 yards, 77 catches, and five touchdowns in two years.
Now, Alabama football has the opportunity to work with Sheridan as its new offensive coordinator. Sheridan, expected to call plays for the Crimson Tide, previously served in the same capacity at Indiana before reuniting with DeBoer. During the NFL scouting combine, Washington tight ends Westover and Devin Culp shared their thoughts on Sheridan.
Culp, a reserve tight end with significant receiving yards in a DeBoer offense, praised Sheridan’s approach to an attack that incorporates power runs and inventive passing concepts. The scheme is designed to highlight players’ talents, deploying Culp into the flats and utilizing Westover in the intermediate game and on third downs.
Westover emphasized the importance of understanding the playbook deeply, especially with the intricate shifts, motions, and plays involved for tight ends. He noted the significance of finding friendly spaces and comprehending coverages in Sheridan’s offense.
Culp expressed confidence in Sheridan’s preparedness for his role at Alabama, highlighting his dedication and commitment to representing the university in the best possible way. As Alabama prepares for the upcoming season, the team will feature returning tight ends CJ Dippre, Danny Lewis Jr., and Robbie Ouzts, along with promising freshman Caleb Odom.
