The San Francisco 49ers, currently in offseason mode with the NFL Draft Combine underway, are exploring potential options for their first selection at No. 31. While offensive and defensive lines have been gaining attention as areas of interest, there is speculation about the team considering a cornerback with their pick.

Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinistry has drawn interest from the 49ers, having taken a formal meeting with the team at the NFL Combine. McKinistry is regarded as a scheme-independent corner with versatility in off-coverage, man-press, and press-bail. Despite not having the fastest straight-line speed, his intelligence on the field sets him apart.

Another Alabama cornerback, Terrion Arnold, stands out for his aggressiveness as a tackler and quick recovery speed. Arnold is considered a good fit for both zone and man-heavy schemes, although he might be prone to struggles against comeback routes and occasional grabbing.

Quinyon Mitchell from Toledo, with clear similarities to Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tariq Woolen, is seen as having the highest ceiling among the three but is also labeled as a boom-or-bust prospect. Mitchell excels in man-coverage, displaying impressive ball skills and speed.

Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins, with good length and strong ball skills, is mentioned as a potential later option, while Cooper DeJean is viewed as a more polarizing prospect, with some scouts projecting him as a safety. Both Wiggins and DeJean are considered second-round grade prospects.

Considering the 49ers’ draft position at No. 31, a cornerback may not be the most realistic choice unless they explore a trade-down scenario. Moving into the early or mid-second round could open up possibilities for selecting a cornerback and gaining additional draft capital. While uncertainty surrounds the NFL Draft, the 49ers are evaluating various options to make informed decisions.
