Justin Pugh Discusses His Possibility of Joining the Giants Again in 2024.
In the latest episode of Talkin’ Ball With Pat Leonard, the New York Daily News journalist and podcast host engaged in a discussion with Justin Pugh, an 11-year NFL veteran guard, about the possibility of his return to the New York Giants. Despite a challenging season for the team without playoffs, Pugh had a personally fulfilling 2023 season at the age of 33.
Last year, the 6’5″, 311-pound seasoned professional rejoined the Giants, the team that initially drafted him with the No. 19 overall pick in 2013 from Syracuse University. Despite the Giants finishing 6-11, Pugh demonstrated glimpses of his pre-ACL injury performance.
Reflecting on his performance, Pugh commented, “I think when I went out there and proved last year that I can still play at a high level, I wasn’t all the way healthy, you know, a year off. I think that any player coming off [an ACL tear], it takes about 18 months until you’re 100% back to normal. The wait wasn’t where I would have loved it last year because I had it didn’t have the ability to train a full offseason.”
Pugh expressed his eagerness to have a full offseason to prepare, highlighting the challenges he faced last year due to his incomplete familiarity with the team’s offense. He emphasized the importance of understanding the nuances and snap counts to optimize his performance.
Regarding his future with the Giants, Pugh stated, “So I think the Giants have a lot bigger fish to fry before they get to Justin Pugh.” He acknowledged his value and leadership within the team but emphasized the necessity to address other cap situations first. He mentioned the ideal timing for negotiations in March when teams have more cap space available, avoiding complications during the season.
Pugh also mentioned connections he has with other teams, including the Washington Football Team and the New England Patriots, but reiterated his desire to remain in New York.
