February has proven to be an exceptional month for the Dallas Mavericks. Starting the month with a loss, they swiftly turned the tide, embarking on a seven-game winning streak. Their sole defeat came against the Milwaukee Bucks, notably in a game where Kyrie Irving was absent.

Since February 5th, the Mavs have claimed victories against formidable opponents like the Philadelphia 76ers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Phoenix Suns. Throughout this streak, they’ve dominated their adversaries, clinching victories by double-digit differentials in all but one game, their matchup against Washington.

New additions P.J. Washington and Daniel Gafford have emerged as pivotal assets for the team, particularly on the defensive front. Washington, for instance, has consistently secured five or more rebounds per game, primarily on the defensive end, while also showcasing adeptness in post defense and perimeter guarding.

Gafford, on the other hand, brings versatility to the table, averaging 12.4 points, 10.3 rebounds, and two blocks per game since joining the team, with an impressive field goal percentage of 54.9%.

However, the team’s success isn’t solely attributed to newcomers. Established stars like Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving have significantly contributed. During the winning streak, Doncic has almost averaged a triple-double, showcasing stellar performance with 31.3 points, ten rebounds, and 9.4 assists per game, accompanied by a noticeable improvement in his defensive game.

Meanwhile, Irving’s shooting accuracy has been outstanding, boasting a 46 percent success rate from beyond the arc during the team’s winning streak.

With the team operating at peak performance, the question arises: Could this be their championship year?

Let’s delve into the factors that position the Mavs as genuine title contenders.

1. Josh Green’s Ascendancy
Josh Green’s development has been instrumental in the Mavericks’ upward trajectory this season. The fourth-year guard has demonstrated significant progress in his game.

Particularly noteworthy is his synergy with Doncic and Irving, proving to be an offensive asset with his agility in driving to the rim and improved shooting prowess. Green currently averages nine points per game with a shooting efficiency of 49 percent from the field, including a career-high 41.8 percent from beyond the arc. His recent performance against the Phoenix Suns highlighted his improved shooting capabilities.

Defensively, Green has also made valuable contributions, averaging 1.3 steals per game in February and showcasing consistent defensive prowess.

As Green continues to evolve, he could emerge as a crucial X-factor for the team come playoff time, alongside the established stars of Doncic and Irving.
