Georgia Was Supposed to appoint James Coley as Wide Receiver Coach.
Shortly after Dell McGee’s departure to Georgia State as their new head coach, the Bulldogs have swiftly filled another coaching position. According to reports by Matt Zenitz at 247 Sports, the Georgia Bulldogs are on track to appoint James Coley as their next wide receiver coach. This move comes after Bryan McClendon, the former wide receiver coach, accepted a position with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as their wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator.
If Georgia finalizes Coley’s hiring, it will mark his second tenure with the Bulldogs’ football program under head coach Kirby Smart. Coley previously served as the team’s wide receivers coach from 2016 to 2017 before transitioning to quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. Following his departure from Georgia after the 2019 season, Coley took on roles at Texas A&M, first as wide receivers coach and then as tight ends coach and co-offensive coordinator. He was recently appointed as South Carolina’s wide receiver coach for the upcoming season but is now expected to return to Athens.
Although Coley’s tenure as offensive coordinator may have been met with mixed reviews, his prowess on the recruiting front cannot be overlooked. He has consistently excelled in recruiting high-caliber talent in the competitive SEC, a skill that could greatly benefit the Bulldogs, particularly in bolstering their wide receiver corps.
