Tracy Walker III, a veteran safety who was once with the Detroit Lions, is expected to become a free agent. Here are three possible destinations for him.Lions Notebook: Why rebuild is 'ahead of schedule' – The Morning Sun

Former Detroit Lions veteran safety, Tracy Walker III, is set to explore new opportunities in the competitive market next month, following his release by the Lions. The team bid farewell to their longest-serving defensive player in a move aimed at saving approximately $5.5 million in cap space. Selected by Detroit in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft as the 82nd overall pick, Walker contributed significantly during his time with the Lions, starting 43 of 79 games and amassing 398 combined tackles, 23 pass defenses, 4 sacks, 3 interceptions, and 2 forced fumbles.

Despite the possibility of saving more money by releasing Walker after June 1, the Lions opted for an earlier release, aligning with their plans to enter the market next month. This timing benefits both parties, providing Walker with the opportunity to sign with a new team at the onset of free agency.

Walker, who faced injury challenges in his career, including a torn Achilles tendon in the 2022 season, transitioned to a special teams role during the 2023 season after starting six contests. As he embarks on the next phase of his career, three potential destinations have emerged:

1. Los Angeles Chargers:
The Chargers, coming off a challenging defensive season, are expected to undergo significant changes under a new coaching staff led by Jim Harbaugh. Walker could be a valuable addition to bolster the Chargers’ secondary, given their struggles in the previous season. With 59 tackles, two passes defended, one force fumble, and one sack in 17 games (six starts), Walker presents an attractive option for a defense in need of reinforcement.

2. Philadelphia Eagles:
The Eagles, facing a safety void after potential changes to Kevin Byard’s contract, could target Walker to address their needs. With rookie Sydney Brown likely out for the season due to injury, the Eagles lack depth at the safety position. The new defensive coordinator, Vic Fangio, prioritizes safety, making Walker a potential candidate to strengthen the Eagles’ defensive backfield.

3. New York Jets:
The Jets may be in the market for a safety if Jordan Whitehead does not return, and Chuck Clark hits the free-agent market. With the draft as an option, the Jets could also consider Walker to fill the void and bring experience to the safety position, potentially starting afresh with a new opportunity.
