Three teams were immediately mentioned as Tracy Walker, a former Lions safety,’s possible destinations.
Three organizations were identified by CBS Sports as potential destinations for Tracy Walker following his release from the Detroit Lions.

It came as no surprise when the Detroit Lions released veteran safety Tracy Walker on Tuesday, given his diminished role and a hefty $12.8 million cap hit for 2024. This move, assuming a pre-June 1 designation, will free up $5.5 million in cap space but result in $7.3 million in dead money for the current year.

Drafted in the third round in 2018, Walker, one of the longest-tenured Lions players, earned a three-year, $25 million deal in 2022 following a strong performance. However, a torn Achilles in Week 3 of the 2022 season derailed his progress. Despite a swift recovery, Walker’s playing time fluctuated throughout the season, culminating in his being inactive for all three playoff games.

Despite the ups and downs, Walker has proven himself as a starting-caliber safety, tallying over 100 total tackles and at least six pass breakups in seasons where he started at least 10 games.

Now a free agent after being released, Walker can immediately sign with any team. Rumors suggest potential fits with the Philadelphia Eagles, San Francisco 49ers, and New York Jets. The Eagles could use a box safety, the 49ers may seek a younger option at safety, and the Jets need to address their safety position. Of these, the Jets and Eagles present clearer paths to a starting role for Walker, who, despite his less-than-ideal departure from Detroit, is expected to have productive years ahead in his career.
