Big News on a Significant Rehab Milestone for Browns QB Deshaun Watson.
The health of quarterback Deshaun Watson is the top goal for the Cleveland Browns in 2024 as they go all in on him.
In November 2023, Watson had shoulder surgery that ended his season, and he has been recovering every day since. On Monday, February 19, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com claimed that Watson is about to throw the football for the first time in three months.
According to a league insider who spoke with Cleveland.com, Watson will start throwing soon, Cabot writes. “This week, Watson returned to the UCLA weight room, which is a big step in his comeback bid,” a source told Cleveland.com. Watson only had his fractured glenoid bone fixed, not his tight rotator cuff.
Cabot further mentioned that the quarterback is now on vacation in Rome after attending a Super Bowl party in Las Vegas nine days before to the game. But Watson will soon be back in the United States and “will be back at it and preparing to throw,” according to him.
Browns might have to settle for Mitch Trubisky as quarterback next season, but they want Joe Flacco back there.
The Browns need to decide who will be Watson’s backup quarterback because he is expected to start throwing to teammates as early as March.
Though the final say in the matter is with Joe Flacco, Cabot tweeted on Sunday that she thinks the team will try to extend Flacco before the start of free agency.
Before Flacco hits the open market on March 13, the Browns will undoubtedly attempt to extend his deal, but he’ll also want to explore his options, according to Cabot. “This offseason, he’ll receive more interest than he did last year,” the statement reads. “Last year, he had no real offers until the Browns called him after Deshaun Watson broke his shoulder socket in Week 10.”
Toni Grossi of 850 ESPN Cleveland speculated that former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mitch Trubisky will be at the top of the Browns’ possible replacement list, assuming that Flacco might not be available in 2024.
“To begin with, Trubisky was well-liked by the Andrew Berry and Paul DePodesta administration upon his release from the draft. Additionally, there’s the connection to Ken Dorsey, as Grossi noted on February 16. As a backup, Trubisky moved from Chicago to Buffalo, where he was coached by Brian Daboll. The quarterback’s coach was Dorsey. I believe Trubisky will be Ken Dorsey’s nominee.
