Why is the stock of Brock Purdy rising?
Right after the game, I initially assessed Purdy’s performance with a B. However, upon reviewing the film and recognizing the 49ers’ failure to strategically position him for success, I would now elevate his grade to a B-plus or even an A-minus.
Despite the 49ers enduring a humiliating loss in the recent Super Bowl, Brock Purdy’s standing improved. While he may not have played at a level to outshine Patrick Mahomes, he certainly wasn’t the cause of the team’s defeat. Unlike Kyle Shanahan, who struggled with blitz pickups, Christian McCaffrey, who fumbled, George Kittle, who gained only four yards and failed to recover a fumble due to distraction, Deebo Samuel, who caught just 3 of 11 targets, and Trent Williams, who committed penalties and struggled throughout the game—these five 49ers’ performances declined.
Despite the crisis moments and chaos surrounding him, Purdy did not commit turnovers. In fact, he threw a touchdown pass and executed some remarkable plays, showcasing his ability to overcome challenges posed by his coach and teammates, a feat not witnessed before.
Initially, I gave Purdy a B for his post-game performance. However, considering the film and acknowledging the team’s failure to set him up for success, I would now adjust his grade to a B-plus or possibly an A-minus.
What makes Purdy even more commendable is his post-game demeanor. He took full responsibility for the loss, a gesture not required of him. This is in stark contrast to Shanahan, who shifted blame onto others and avoided accountability. Purdy emerges as the quarterback and leader the 49ers desperately need, highlighting a contrast with Shanahan’s approach.
