If the Dallas Cowboys are seeking to reinforce their running back position, LP Cruz of SB Nation’s Blogging The Boys suggests that they should consider looking towards Cincinnati Bengals tailback Joe Mixon. According to Cruz, adding Mixon would benefit both parties involved. The Cowboys currently face a need at running back with Tony Pollard and Rico Dowdle heading into free agency. Additionally, despite being a compelling story, Deuce Vaughn appears unprepared for a leading role in the Cowboys’ backfield.

While reports last year indicated a potential rift between Mixon and the Bengals, they eventually reached an agreement on a reworked contract. To bring Mixon to the Cowboys, a trade with the Bengals would be necessary since Mixon still has a year remaining on his current contract, with a base salary of $2.2 million for the 2024 NFL season. Although the Cowboys have Tony Pollard, there’s speculation that he may explore NFL free agency following a subpar 2023 season. Pollard’s regression in 2023, labeled as a “fantasy bust,” raises concerns for the Cowboys about the security of the running back position, even if Pollard decides to stay in Arlington.

Comparatively, Mixon is slightly older than Pollard but has proven himself as a more reliable option as a primary ground player. With 6,412 rushing yards, 49 touchdowns, 2,139 receiving yards, and 13 touchdown catches in 97 games played, Mixon offers a more established track record as a No. 1 running back.
