NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Honors Mark Cuban with A Payment.
During the annual press conference at Lucas Oil Stadium for All-Star Weekend, NBA commissioner Adam Silver acknowledged Mark Cuban’s significant impact on the league throughout his 24-year tenure as the governor of the Dallas Mavericks. Silver praised Cuban for his influence, noting that Cuban, who initially entered the league as a technologist, played a pivotal role in pushing the league to focus on technology and marketing. Despite occasional public disagreements, Silver emphasized the respectful relationship between Cuban and the league, both in terms of technology initiatives and basketball-related matters, such as officiating.
Cuban purchased the Mavericks in 2000 and later sold the majority stake in December, while still retaining a 27 percent ownership. Silver highlighted Cuban’s desire for the NBA to be forward-thinking and credited him as a game-changing owner who, despite occasional frustrations, remained an active participant in league affairs.
Silver expressed satisfaction that Cuban remains a significant investor in the Mavericks, maintaining his presence and engagement with the league by frequently communicating through texts, emails, and calls. In addition to discussing Cuban’s legacy, Silver briefly mentioned the results of All-Star Saturday, including the Skills Challenge victory for the Indiana Pacers trio, Damian Lillard’s win in the Three-Point Contest, and Stephen Curry’s triumph over Sabrina Ionescu in the new Stephen vs. Sabrina three-point contest. The recap also highlighted Mac McClung’s successful defense of the slam dunk title against Jaylen Brown, featuring a perfect score for his dunk over Shaquille O’Neal.
