Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew and ex-Rangers striker Ross McCormack have recently undertaken short-term moves to the 11th tier of English football.

Mulgrew retired last year after his stint with Dundee United. On the other hand, McCormack, who hadn’t found a club since departing non-league side Liversedge in 2023, made this move after a period away from the game following limited playing time at Motherwell and Aldershot Town.

Doncaster City, a club in the Central Midlands League North Division, announced on Friday night that Mulgrew, a five-time Premiership title winner with Celtic, and McCormack, who began his career at Rangers before a successful spell in the EFL, had signed short-term deals. Additionally, former Norwich City hero Wes Hoolahan and ex-Airdrie and Livingston midfielder Scott McLaughlin joined the team. All four players started in Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Dearne and District, witnessed by a crowd of over 800 people at the seventh level of English football.

Doncaster City described the game as a “wonderful advert for Step 7 of Non-League Football,” acknowledging the significant attention it garnered, with 844 attendees at the ground.

The decision of accomplished veterans to drop down to the lower tiers has sparked curiosity. McCormack, who debuted for Rangers in 2004 and played for clubs such as Leeds United, Cardiff City, Fulham, and Aston Villa, has taken this unexpected step. Mulgrew, who spent six years at Celtic from 2010 to 2016, initially started his career at Parkhead, had a stint at Wolves, and returned to Celtic after showcasing his skills at Aberdeen.
