NBA player Luka Doncic of the Mavericks describes his ideal profession.
At the age of 24, Luka Doncic has already established himself as one of the premier players in the NBA. While he has achieved remarkable feats, such as being the fourth player in NBA history to score at least 73 points in a single game, he believes there is still a long journey ahead to solidify his career and reputation.
In a recent appearance on JJ Redick’s podcast “The Old Man and the Three,” Doncic expressed that, despite his accomplishments, he hasn’t won anything substantial in the NBA yet. He outlined his vision of a perfect career, which includes winning an NBA Championship and securing an MVP award.
While winning an NBA Championship might be a more challenging goal, Doncic sees earning an MVP award as a more attainable objective. He has consistently been a top contender for the MVP since his second season, finishing fourth in the voting during that campaign. However, he has yet to receive a first-place vote.
Doncic’s case for MVP this year appears strong, considering his impressive stats – leading in scoring with 34.3 points per game, ranking third in assists with 9.6 per game, and being the top rebounder among guards with 8.8 rebounds per game. Despite these accomplishments, he faces challenges in the MVP race, as the Mavericks’ lower seed in the Western Conference diminishes his candidacy.
For Doncic to achieve his dream of a perfect career, the Mavericks need to enhance their roster to better complement their star player. While Doncic is undoubtedly a key factor in their title contention hopes, history has shown that no superstar can carry a team to a championship alone. The recent frontcourt player acquisitions, Daniel Gafford and P.J. Washington, made by the front office at this season’s trade deadline, are steps in the right direction. It remains to be seen if these moves, along with potential future improvements, can help Doncic realize his aspirations of a perfect career.
