Calvary Day School’s wide receiver, Thomas Blackshear, is currently drawing attention from two SEC rivals, creating what Dawgs247 recruiting reporter Benjamin Wolk refers to as an “Athens vs. Knoxville battle.” The rising senior, previously a teammate of Tennessee quarterback signee Jake Merklinger, is positioned as the No. 347 prospect in the 2025 class according to 247Sports’ Composite Rankings. Blackshear initially had Florida State in his top three alongside Georgia and Tennessee, but recent developments have shifted the focus, with the Seminoles now out of contention. Instead, Tennessee is emerging as a strong contender alongside the in-state Bulldogs.

During his junior season, Blackshear showcased his skills with 27 catches for 551 yards and five touchdowns. Despite his initial interest in Florida State, recent developments have firmly placed Tennessee in the spotlight, with the Volunteers maintaining consistent communication with the talented receiver. Blackshear expressed, “I have been talking to Tennessee almost every day. They are always checking in, making sure I am doing good and showing me their interest in me,” as stated in an interview with On3’s Hunter Shelton.

Tennessee has recently secured a commitment from Joakim Dodson, a wide receiver from Collierville High School, boosting their 2025 recruiting class, currently ranked 10th. The Volunteers plan to enhance their wide receiver lineup with two to three more additions throughout the recruiting cycle, with Blackshear identified as one of the prospects they are closely monitoring. The evolving situation adds intrigue to how Blackshear’s recruitment journey will unfold.
