Donta Hightower, a former standout from Alabama, was hired by the Patriots to coach linebackers.
Dont’a Hightower, a former standout linebacker from the University of Alabama, has been appointed as the New England Patriots linebacker, as announced by SportsTrust Advisors on Friday. Selected as the 25th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Hightower spent his entire nine-season career with the Patriots, achieving two Pro Bowl selections in 2016 and 2019 and securing three Super Bowl championships. This hiring is part of the Patriots’ efforts to establish a new era after mutually parting ways with head coach Bill Belichick about a month ago, following challenging seasons. Jerod Mayo, Hightower’s former teammate and fellow starting linebacker, assumed Belichick’s role a few days later.
Although Hightower officially retired from playing in the NFL 325 days ago, the opportunity to return to the league, this time as a coach alongside a former teammate, proved too enticing to pass up. At 33 years old, Hightower brings a wealth of experience and qualifications to help develop players in his long-time position. His impressive NFL career includes 650 tackles, 76 quarterback hits, 30 sacks, six fumble recoveries, three forced fumbles, and two interceptions. Recognized as a member of the New England Patriots All-2010s and All-Dynasty teams, one of the defining moments of Hightower’s career occurred in Super Bowl LI against the Atlanta Falcons. His strip-sack of Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, down 28-12 with eight minutes remaining, marked a crucial turning point in the Patriots’ historic comeback.
Hightower’s collegiate success at the University of Alabama, where he earned Consensus All-American and First Team All-SEC honors in 2011 and achieved two BCS National Championships in 2009 and 2011, has played a significant role in shaping his career. Now, in his new coaching role, Hightower aims to guide his players to make historic plays, reminiscent of his achievements with the Crimson Tide and the Patriots not too long ago.
