A busy night for Travis Konecny as the Flyers defeat the Jets

2023-2024 NHL Season Preview: Philadelphia Flyers

On February 9, the Philadelphia Flyers secured a 4-1 victory against the Winnipeg Jets, with Travis Konecny achieving a Gordie Howe hat trick, contributing one goal, one assist, and engaging in a fight. Morgan Frost and Ryan Poehling also played crucial roles, each registering one goal and one assist, while Tyson Foerster added another goal for the Flyers. This win marked Philadelphia’s second consecutive victory since the conclusion of the All-Star break.

Flyers’ goaltender Samuel Ersson showcased a strong performance with 28 saves. On the opposing side, Kyle Connor managed to score the lone goal for the Jets, who have now faced five consecutive losses (0-4-1). The absence of defenseman Brenden Dillon, serving a three-game suspension for an illegal check, further impacted the Jets.

Despite the Flyers holding a 4-0 lead, the Jets struggled to capitalize on a power play in the third period. Philadelphia’s Garnet Hathaway’s delay of game penalty provided the Jets with an opportunity, but they couldn’t overcome Ersson’s defense, with Sean Monahan missing an open net chance.

In the third period, Winnipeg managed to get on the board with Connor’s goal at 14:48. The Flyers faced a two-man advantage for 58 seconds but couldn’t capitalize further. The game’s intensity increased with a fight between Konecny and Winnipeg’s Neal Pionk.

Philadelphia took an early lead in the first period, with Poehling assisting Foerster for a 1-0 advantage. The chippy atmosphere continued with Konecny’s goal at 14:03, extending the lead to 2-0. Frost added another goal at 18:06, securing a 3-0 lead for the Flyers.

Despite Winnipeg’s aggressive start in the second period, the Flyers seized an opportunity, and Poehling scored a short-handed goal at 2:29, increasing the lead to 4-0. This marked the Flyers’ 11th short-handed goal of the season.
