Allegiant Stadium is prepared for the clash between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers in the 2024 Super Bowl on Sunday, February 11th, concluding the 2023 NFL season. This marks the second time in five seasons that the Chiefs and 49ers have reached the championship game, but it is the inaugural Super Bowl hosted in Las Vegas.

As the anticipation builds towards Super Bowl Sunday, a preview of the field’s appearance has been shared by Paul Gutierrez on Twitter. Allegiant Stadium, similar to State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, has the capability to roll the natural grass field outside for growth before repositioning it inside for the game, as depicted in a time-lapse video.

However, the NFL hopes to avoid a repeat of last season’s issues with the playing surface. In the 2023 Super Bowl at State Farm Stadium, Philadelphia Eagles players complained about the subpar field conditions, causing slips and slides throughout the game. Even Chiefs head coach Andy Reid acknowledged the loose and re-sodded turf.

This year’s Super Bowl will be the first without George Toma, known as “The Sodfather,” overseeing the playing surface after his retirement. Additionally, the 49ers have faced challenges with practice field conditions in Las Vegas, practicing at UNLV with artificial turf. The artificial surface has been criticized for causing more injuries than natural grass, and the NFL had to address concerns by laying down sod a week prior to the 49ers’ arrival. However, reports suggest that the field remains substandard, drawing widespread disapproval from various members of the 49ers’ organization.
