The Big Game Will Use 100% Carbon-Free Energy in a Historic First: Allegiant Stadium and the Las Vegas Raiders Use NZero for Real-Time Energy & Emissions Data.

4 Las Vegas Raiders who improved the most in the 2023 season

In a groundbreaking development, the upcoming 2024 Super Bowl, scheduled for February 11th, will be the first-ever football event powered entirely by renewable, carbon-free energy (CFE). The verification of this achievement comes from the real-time data and decarbonization platform, NZero.

Through strategic partnerships, policies, and environmental programs aimed at minimizing their ecological impact, the Las Vegas Raiders have successfully transitioned Allegiant Stadium, the host venue for this year’s Super Bowl, to rely completely on 100% CFE. NZero’s assessment indicates that the estimated 28 MWh of electricity needed for the championship game is equivalent to powering 46,052 households for the four-hour duration. Importantly, because the stadium is powered entirely by CFE, the event will have zero electricity-associated emissions.

Collaborating with NZero, the Las Vegas Raiders and Allegiant Stadium consistently report and plan their ongoing net-zero initiatives. NZero’s role involves validating energy and emissions data, providing insights, and aiding in the analysis of decarbonization efforts. This partnership signifies a commitment to a new era of sustainability in sports, highlighting the compatibility of sustainable practices and business operations.

The achievement of 100% CFE is facilitated by a 25-year energy supply agreement between the Raiders and NV Energy, initiated in October 2023. This agreement ensures the commitment to power Allegiant Stadium, the Raiders’ administrative facilities, and the Henderson practice facility with renewable energy, including electricity from new, in-state solar power plants.

NZero, utilizing real-time tracking of energy and emissions, reveals that the Raiders organization has witnessed a 15% reduction in carbon emissions across all three scopes for the year 2022. Following the implementation of the NV Energy agreement in 2023, this reduction increased to 30% for the full year. Looking ahead to 2024, assuming no changes in emissions, the Raiders’ projected reduction is an impressive 68%, primarily attributed to Allegiant Stadium being powered by renewable energy.

The Super Bowl will also benefit from the waste diversion program initiated by the Raiders and Allegiant Stadium (Scope 3 emissions), recognized by the Green Sports Alliance with the Play to Zero Award. NZero calculates that since 2022, waste diversion has prevented emissions equivalent to taking 75,777 cars off the road during game time.

In addition to the Super Bowl preparations, Allegiant Stadium obtained LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in July 2023, highlighting its commitment to green building design and environmental sustainability. This accomplishment underscores that sustainability is not only an environmental responsibility but also a strategic aspect of the business plan for the stadium.
