SO SAD: Ravens has totally agreed to tread their qb due to…..

Analyst: The Ravens may save on cap by cutting their $99 million starter.

The Baltimore Ravens face a crucial offseason after their AFC Championship game loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. With a limited cap, there is a need to improve the team while navigating financial constraints. One suggested cost-saving move is the post-June 1 cut of starting left tackle Ronnie Stanley, potentially saving $15 million, despite an $11 million dead cap hit.

The Ravens currently have approximately $7.3 million in cap space, and freeing up $15 million would offer flexibility in addressing offseason needs. Stanley’s injury-prone history, missing several games in recent seasons, has led to concerns about his consistent performance.

Drafted in 2016, Stanley was expected to solidify the offensive line and serve as a blindside blocker. Despite being named a Pro Bowler and First Team All-Pro in 2019, his subsequent years have been marred by injuries. In 2020, Stanley signed a substantial five-year, $98.75 million contract extension, but injuries hindered his playing time.

The 2023 season saw Stanley’s performance fluctuate, ranking 37th in PFF’s overall grades, 22nd in pass blocking, and 41st in run blocking among offensive tackles. Considering his inconsistent play and the emergence of backup Patrick Mekari, there’s a suggestion to give Mekari a starting role, potentially replacing Stanley.

The Ravens enter an offseason where they risk losing key talent on both the offensive and defensive sides. Defensive players like Justin Madubuike, Patrick Queen, Jadeveon Clowney, and Ronald Darby are seeking substantial contracts. Offensive contributors, including Odell Beckham Jr., Gus Edwards, J.K. Dobbins, Tyler Huntley, and Kevin Zeitler, face free agency.

To retain their championship core and address position gaps, the Ravens need financial flexibility. General Manager Eric DeCosta must navigate the cap effectively to retain crucial players while making strategic decisions to strengthen the team for the upcoming season.
