Alex Caruso Should Be Traded by the Celtics

In order to give themselves the best chance of lifting Banner 18 to the rafters of TD Garden, the Celtics shouldn’t think twice.

The NBA trade deadline looms just three days away, and the Boston Celtics, leading the league with a 38-12 record, face decisions on potential moves. Despite the team’s success, President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens and the front office prioritize team chemistry within their close-knit unit.

Player Jaylen Brown lauds the current Celtics roster, describing it as one of the best in terms of character and camaraderie. The team’s cohesion is considered essential, making any move carefully evaluated for its impact on the established atmosphere.

While converting Neemias Queta from a two-way to a full-time NBA contract is an option, the Celtics may explore small moves, such as acquiring a big wing or a player like John Konchar, fitting within the Grant Williams traded player exception (TPE) of $6.2 million.

The team’s stellar performance is highlighted by a 38-12 record, yet if they fall short of winning the Larry O’Brien Trophy in June, the reasons would likely extend beyond trade decisions. Despite this, the Celtics may consider significant but sensible moves to strengthen their position for the playoffs.

The Chicago Bulls, currently 23-27 and ninth in the Eastern Conference, have reportedly placed players like Alex Caruso on the trade market. To secure Caruso, the Celtics might offer a package built around Payton Pritchard and two protected first-round selections, potentially involving other players to balance the deal.

While Pritchard’s team-friendly contract and on-court contributions are valuable, Caruso’s defensive prowess and ability to create transition opportunities make him an attractive option for the Celtics. Caruso’s contract extends through the 2024-25 season, and his inclusion could significantly enhance Boston’s defensive capabilities.

Although the Celtics face potential luxury tax penalties and a substantial payroll, prioritizing their chances at an NBA title may warrant strategic sacrifices in the pursuit of raising Banner 18 in the TD Garden.
