As the stars align for Dan Ashworth, Newcastle might recruit a free replacement for Bruno Guimaraes.

Dan Ashworth, the sports director of Newcastle United, might have to let go of Bruno Guimaraes in the summer and find an inexpensive replacement. Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules have hindered the Magpies recently; nevertheless, Ross Barkley, the surprise acquisition from Luton Town, may be the solution they’ve been waiting for.

Since joining Luton last summer, Barkley has been playing at an incredible level. His 17 Premier League appearances and six goal contributions are complemented by a string of outstanding passing performances from central midfield.

Barkley scored a goal and assisted on another in an exciting 4–4 tie at St James’ Park on Saturday, giving Newcastle, Ashworth, and manager Eddie Howe a close-up look at him. Some are predicting that the 30-year-old will make a late push for Gareth Southgate’s England team at the 2024 Euros.

When Barkley was a free agent after leaving OGC Nice last summer, reports state that Newcastle made him an offer. Despite allowing him to elude them, the fact that he and Howe are represented by the same agency may allow them to try again after the campaign comes to an end to sign him.
