Octopus Thrower uses midseason report cards to rate the Detroit Red Wings.
In January, the Detroit Red Wings had an incredible month. They rebounded well into the postseason race after putting up a 20-point month. The squad will get some time off during the All-Star break, which follows, with only Alex DeBrincat qualifying for the All-Star Game.
The Detroit Red Wings will take a break, nevertheless, in the hopes of rejuvenating their squad and having them fully fit for the second half of the season. Detroit needs to put on a strong second half if it is to continue battling.
The Octopus Thrower crew will examine the Red Wings roster after 50 games to assess the team’s current state and potential future direction before turning the page to the second half of the season.
In the process, we will create report cards for the Red Wings players, assigning grades and spending time discussing what they are doing well and what they might need to adjust. Now is a great time to assess Detroit and determine what went well and poorly.
After January, the Detroit Red Wings midseason record is excellent.
Detroit still has 32 games remaining on their schedule even though the 2023–24 season is well over halfway over. However, with 32 games remaining and 50 down, it’s a good idea for the team to reorganize and assess what improvements can be made before the upcoming 32-game sprint.
Though considering the team’s December performance, it’s hardly where many people were expecting Detroit to be, a surprising comeback in January propelled the team back into the postseason hunt.
At the All-Star break, the Red Wings are tied for fourth place in the Atlantic Division with a record of 26-18-6 after 50 games. With 58 points, they are level with the Toronto Maple Leafs and behind the Florida Panthers by eight and the Tampa Bay Lightning by one point, respectively.
The New York Islanders are the next closest team in the wildcard battle, and they are ahead by six points. Detroit’s successful month helped them get back on track and pushed their season out of the mire. If Detroit were to stay in this rut, the midseason round-up would be very different in appearance and atmosphere.
