The Detroit Lions’ historic playoff run came to an end this weekend with a devastating loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. Detroit led 24-7 at halftime but struggled in the second half, with head coach Dan Campbell making dubious selections to go for it on fourth down. Following the game, a story surfaced that the Lions’ senior quarterback is slated to retire this year, surprising many in the NFL.
The Detroit Lions quarterback is retiring.
Teddy Bridgewater, an NFL journeyman and Detroit quarterback, is likely to play his final game in the NFL after being drafted in 2014. Bridgewater has played for various clubs and was Jared Goff’s backup in 2023. Aside from the veteran quarterback’s earlier announcement that 2023 would be his final season, a photo of Bridgewater and his head coach going off the field together surfaced on social media.
I was young and trapped in this lifestyle, believing that I was a football player 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until I was injured and understood that I was only a football player for three hours on Sunday afternoons. Aside from that, I’m Theodore Bridgewater, so it just put things in perspective and helped me not have to focus about not being a starter anymore.
It’s like, ‘Man, I still got a purpose.’ And my goal is larger than the game of football. Football is simply a platform that I have.
Bridgewater has spent his career with six different organizations, including the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and Miami Dolphins, before joining the Detroit Lions. Throughout his career, he has 15,120 passing yards and 75 total touchdowns, as well as three seasons of passing for more than 3,000 yards. While his career was marred by horrific injuries, many NFL fans will remember him as a competent quarterback and a wonderful person.
While Bridgewater’s career will not conclude on a high note or with a Super Bowl victory, he will have had a career that he is proud of and pleased with, which is all that matters in the long run. What is your favorite moment from the veteran quarterback’s 10-year career, and which team will you associate him with?
