Could Atlanta’s new offensive coordinator help lure Kirk Cousins?
Kevin O’Connell’s successor in Los Angeles is a new coordinator in Atlanta.

If Kirk Cousins does not return to the Minnesota Vikings, the Atlanta Falcons will remain a potential future destination for the veteran quarterback.

There were suggestions that Cousins and Bill Belichick could join Atlanta, but after the Falcons hired Raheem Morris as head coach, that speculation quickly died down. Now that Cousins has a new link, signing with Atlanta makes a lot of sense.

On Saturday, the Falcons reportedly hired Zac Robinson, the Rams’ pass-game coach, as their new offensive coordinator. Why is Robinson important? Well, he comes from the Sean McVay family tree, which also includes current Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell. In reality, he succeeded O’Connell in Los Angeles after the Vikings hired him in 2022.

If Robinson’s offensive philosophy is comparable to McVay’s, it will also be similar to O’Connell’s scheme, where Cousins has thrived over the last two seasons.

In his Friday mailbag at Purple Insider, Matthew Coller discussed Cousins’ potential move to Atlanta after Belichick’s departure.

The Falcons are unquestionably a win-now team, given how they have built their squad through the draft in recent years. That truth remains unchanged with Morris in control. The person Morris picks as offensive coordinator may be the most important factor to consider. If he hires Zac Robinson, the Rams’ quarterbacks coach, he will be taking over the same offense that KOC is utilizing with a former NFL quarterback. It could be smart for Atlanta to sell Kirk if they want him.

Cousins has 6,878 throwing yards, 47 touchdowns, and 19 interceptions in 25 games with the O’Connell offense. He dominated the league in Year 2 under O’Connell before rupturing his Achilles in Week 8 of this season.

And no one can deny that Cousins’ wife Julie is from the Atlanta area, and the couple married in Atlanta 10 years ago.

Cousins will technically become a free agent if he does not re-sign with Minnesota by March 13.
